UNDERGROUND CITY@ DIVUS UNIT 30 curated by Michaela Freeman

UNDERGROUND CITY uncovers unseen, forgotten corners of metropolis, city within a city, sense of inhabiting one’s little space as affirmation of belonging and urban undergrowth - surprisingly hidden after all that discovering – but also what is part of thefantasy inspired by the city, visions and dreams (or nightmares) of the future of the pulsating cityscape. Each metropolis becomes a unique organism that breathes and develops. It’s created by humans, so their creation is no more artificial than any other accidental or incidental nature’s creation or advancement, even if “building itself has become an act of destruction”.

The project book "Stuffed Silence" includes several contributions:
The specific installation "Stuffed Silence" has been analyzed and contextualized by the curator of the exhibition Valentín Roma. The art historian Marta Gili (Jeu de paume Paris) writes about Andreas M. Kaufmann´s artistic practice in general. Andreas M. Kaufmann talks with the musician Gabriel Ananda about his music, specifically in their collaboration in this project. Eventually the ethnologist Markus Coester approaches the specific language in Fela Kuti´s Lyrics.

These contributions are intersected by four inserts, which contain information about the artistic conception, a photographical in-situ documentation of the intervention at Espai ZER01, still images of the whole animation, examples of Fela Kuti´s Lyrics and the values which function as actors in this four-channel video installation.
The book has been rounded up with eight unanswered questions to federal judge Baltasar Garzón, related web-links, bibliographical references and translations of all original texts into English, Spanish and Catalan.

ON THE OCCASION OF AN EXHIBITION OF ANDREAS M. KAUFMANN AT BUNKIER SZTUKI KRAKOW 2002 is a collaborative and nonprofit book project with 101 contributions. Most of them have been made exclusively for this publication, all by different authors, such as architects, designers, filmmakers, artists, critics and curators etc. from all over the world. The book opens up to the outside by referring and linking itself to other media. It follows issues that are situated in the complex field of the "local" and "global" and asks for the collective memory/memories questioning if there can be a copyright on them.

Being rather edited like a film-story-board, it subversively undermines what one would generally expect from a book: In the main part of the book all contributions are displayed in their original language; furthermore, as a rule, the names of the respective authors can only be found in the second part of this book called "references" unless the contribution is a letter of which sender and receiver are constitutional. However, one may find most translations, names and biographies of the respective authors, additional information, etc. All texts have been translated into Polish and English. Last but not least the book should be understood as an object that wants to be used.
